Aalborg: Vikings on a hill, herring in a fjord, a merchant’s house and a war.
Aalborg sits on the Limfjord, which explains everything. A historian walks the Viking burial ground at Lindholm Høje, the herring trade that paid for Jens Bang’s house, the merchant streets of the Renaissance town, and the airfield the Germans took on the first morning of the occupation in 1940.

The timeline the walk follows
Seven hundred Viking and Iron Age graves on the hill across the fjord.
Herring and cattle across the Limfjord.
The richest merchant’s house in Denmark, still standing.
De Danske Spritfabrikker; industrial Aalborg.
German paratroops take the airfield at dawn.
