Ghent: The cloth city that defied an emperor and became Belgium’s Manchester.
In 1300 Ghent was the largest city north of the Alps after Paris, and a historian shows where the money went: the Gravensteen, the guild houses on the Graslei, the cathedral with the Van Eyck altarpiece, the square where Charles V humiliated the city in 1540, and the cotton mills that made it industrial before anywhere else on the continent.

The timeline the walk follows
The count’s castle against his own citizens.
The Van Eyck brothers finish the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
Born in Ghent, he puts nooses on its notables.
A smuggled spinning mule; the industrial revolution arrives.
Britain and the United States end their war here.
