St. Gallen: An Irish monk, a library, and the embroidery that dressed the world.
St. Gallen is LocalBini’s home city, and its history is bigger than its size. A historian walks the abbey founded by an Irish monk, the library with the plan of an ideal monastery from 820, Vadian’s Reformation, and the oriel windowed town that in 1900 sold half the world’s embroidery.

The timeline the walk follows
An Irish monk builds a cell in the Steinach valley.
The only surviving architectural plan from the early Middle Ages.
The mayor and humanist leads the Reformation; the town and the abbey split.
The world’s textile capital; the oriels are paid for in lace.
The abbey precinct is listed.
