Germany
Bonn: Beethoven, the Rhine and a capital that was meant to be temporary.
Bonn was a Roman camp, a prince bishop’s residence, Beethoven’s birthplace and, for fifty years, the capital of West Germany. A historian walks the baroque town, the university on the Rhine, and the parliamentary quarter where the Federal Republic was written.

The timeline the walk follows
A legionary camp on the Rhine frontier.
The court musician’s son in the Bonngasse.
The Prussian university in the electoral palace.
The Basic Law is signed; Bonn becomes the federal capital.
The Bundestag votes, by 18 votes, to leave.
