Cities / Paris
France
Paris: Lutetia to the Liberation, in one afternoon or five.
Paris keeps every century on the same street. A historian walks the Île de la Cité as a Roman island, the Marais as a royal quarter, the boulevards as Haussmann’s answer to revolution, and the Latin Quarter as it was on the last day of the Occupation.

The timeline the walk follows
Caesar’s legions and a Gallic town on an island.
The cathedral and the medieval university city.
Bastille, the Tuileries, the Place de la Concorde.
Boulevards, sewers and a city rebuilt in twenty years.
Four years of Occupation end in one August week.
