Liverpool: Docks, empire, the slave trade, the Irish, the Blitz and four musicians.
Liverpool made its money on water and a historian starts there: the docks that made it the second port of the empire, the trade in enslaved people that made the first fortunes, the Irish who arrived in the 1840s, the bunker that ran the Battle of the Atlantic, and the streets the Beatles grew up in.

The timeline the walk follows
King John founds a port for Ireland.
Liverpool ships carry more enslaved Africans than any other British port.
The first enclosed non combustible dock; the port at its peak.
The May Blitz; the Battle of the Atlantic is run from Derby House.
Lennon meets McCartney at a church fete in Woolton.
