Copenhagen: A bishop’s harbour, a builder king, two fires, one bombardment and one rescue.
Copenhagen was a harbour before it was a capital. A historian walks Absalon’s fortress under the parliament, Christian IV’s brick city, the fires of 1728 and 1795 that gave it its shape, the British bombardment of 1807, and the October nights of 1943 when the city’s Jews were rowed to Sweden.

The timeline the walk follows
The bishop’s castle on Slotsholmen.
Rosenborg, the Exchange, Nyboder: the builder king.
A third of the city burns; a second fire in 1795.
The British fleet shells the city for three nights.
Seven thousand Danish Jews cross to Sweden in fishing boats.
