Dijon: The Dukes of Burgundy and a city that outlived them.
For a century Dijon was the capital of a state richer than France. A historian walks the ducal palace, the tombs of Philip the Bold and John the Fearless, the parish streets with the owl carved into the church, and the merchant houses that made mustard and wine a trade.

The timeline the walk follows
A French prince becomes Duke of Burgundy; Dijon becomes a court.
The last duke falls at Nancy; Burgundy returns to France.
Magistrates build the Renaissance hôtels particuliers.
The Dijon trade codified; wine on the Route des Grands Crus.
The industrial century in a medieval town.
