Cities / Trier
Germany
Trier: Rome north of the Alps, and Karl Marx.
Trier has more Roman buildings than any city north of the Alps and a historian uses all of them: the Porta Nigra, the Basilica of Constantine, the baths and the amphitheatre. Then the cathedral, the electors’ baroque city and the house where Karl Marx was born in 1818.

The timeline the walk follows
Founded under Augustus on the Moselle.
The city gate that survived by becoming a church.
Trier is an imperial capital; the Basilica is his throne room.
At Brückenstrasse 10, a lawyer’s son.
Heavy damage; the Roman monuments survive.
